Exploring the Voice of Yoga
Welcome to Yoga Vāṇi!
On the auspicious occasion of Guru Pūrnima I am making a humble beginning to start a newsletter dedicated to the yoga community anchored in the teachings of Sri T Krishnamacharya tradition.
Vāṇi in Sanskrit refers to:
A Voice - In the Shākta tradition, commentaries of certain Tantric texts mentions Vāṇi as a voice.
Speech or utterance - the same as वाच् (vāc) which is believed to be of four kinds as cited by the grammarians and explained by Bhartrhari.
Eloquence - As per Shivapurāṇa, one could achieve eloquence through the worship of Shiva.
Saraswati - purāṇās also use the word Vāṇi to refer to the Goddess of Knoweldge, Saraswati.
Sri TKV Desikachar, son of Yoga Acharya Sri T Krishnamacharya has said that yoga is a relationship. This definition of yoga has been truly transformative for me and has also informed my teaching and practice of yoga.
My wish for Yoga Vāṇi is to become a space where diverse authentic voices of Yoga to find its eloquent expression with the grace of Saraswati Devi, staying true to the teachings of the guru parampara (lineage).
As I begin this journey, I am in touch with a deep sense of gratitude to my teachers on this path who continue to show me through their living and teaching how to be a pātram (clean vessel) to hold the thread of this living heritage and tradition with grace and humility. My pranāms to Raghu Ananthanarayanan, Saraswati Vasudevan, R. Sriram, Jyotsna, Sujaya Isaac (Yoga Kalaa), Dr. Latha Satish, Srivatsa Ramaswamy, Shobana Srinivasan (KYM), Sashikala Ananth, Apoorva Jalan, Mamatha Talluri and numerous other mentors and Sangha members from YogaVahini and Ritambhara Ashram communities from whom I learn, draw inspiration and receive support on this journey.
